Zeromatter
ML Infra Engineer
hybrid • USA • senior • $100–300k / год
Our mission is to accelerate how robotics and autonomy is built, tested, and trained by leveraging simulation to the fullest extent possible. Part of what we're building to accomplish this is a cloud-based sensor simulation platform that is beyond the state of the art.
We are looking for an individual who can support us in accomplishing this mission. You should apply if you're interested in working at a small-scale startup where you can live up to your potential, unencumbered by office politics or team boundaries. Working at Zeromatter gives you an opportunity to work on technology that will soon be used by various well-known companies who have strong simulation needs.
At Zeromatter, we believe in evaluating candidates based on their skills, experience, and potential. We are committed to providing equal opportunities to all applicants and believe that having a diverse team spanning a wide variety of backgrounds, academically as well as in general, is a key asset. If you're passionate about robotics and simulation and eager to make a difference in the field, we'd love to hear from you!
Role Description
----------------
As a Sensor & Material Characterization Lead, you'll bridge the gap between real and synthetic, working directly with customers and engineers to understand and model their sensing systems — and the materials those sensors observe. You will combine technical expertise with strong communication skills, hands-on time with hardware, and work directly with our software product. You won't be starting cold: you'll ramp up working directly alongside the current lead.
Responsibilities
----------------
* Collaborate with customers to gather and analyze detailed specifications for lenses, imaging sensors, ISPs, lidars, and radars.
* Coordinate with internal teams such as rendering and content to help engineers implement features and solutions.
* Manage in-house tools, both hardware and software, used for characterizing and simulating sensors and materials.
* Organize comprehensive testing and validation methods, providing quantitative results where needed to demonstrate simulation accuracy.
* Identify, quantify, and communicate sim-to-real gaps, and drive characterization efforts that close them.
* Organize and prioritize work for other engineers, unblocking them and coordinating characterization efforts across sensor modalities.
* Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications
--------------
* Technical hardware knowledge across all three main sensor modalities: cameras, lidars, and radars.
* Hands-on laboratory experience building, working with, and debugging custom laboratory equipment and sensing hardware.
* Experience working with non-visible systems (SW/LW IR, UV, Radar).
* Experience with computer graphics rendering.
* Understanding of related material properties such as optical BRDF, permittivity, etc.
* Basic metrology skills for sensors and materials — for example, spectral material reflectance, radar antenna/lobe pattern measurement, or camera lens MTF.
* Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical standards (e.g. EMVA-1288 or comparable sensor and measurement standards).
* Understanding of sim-to-real gap problems and their impact on model validity.
* Previous autonomy experience — self-driving vehicles, drones, aircraft, or industrial/assembly robots.
* Familiarity with signal processing for these sensing systems (e.g. camera ISPs, radar/lidar DSPs).
* Foundational knowledge of engineering principles for sensing systems, such as optical and RF engineering.
* Proven ability to work effectively with incomplete information and make sound technical decisions.
* Proficiency in Python scripting for data analysis, testing, and automation.
* Excellent technical communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts for various audiences.
* Experience organizing work streams, removing team obstacles, and negotiating shared resource usage.
Ideally you also have:
----------------------
* Practical experience with optical imaging, photonics, and RF system engineering.
* Experience with material optical measurement instrumentation (spectrophotometers, goniometers, integrating spheres).
* Experience developing custom measurement or calibration hardware/software.
* Knowledge of OpenCV and computer vision principles.
* Experience with optical design software (Zemax, CodeV, or similar for chosen sensor).
* Familiarity with relevant standards, such as EMVA-1288 for camera characterization.
* Rust programming experience.
